dtr reaches out to Samoa - Oct 2016Alice Buchanan October 26, 2016 : 0
dtr has always been a strong supporter of our local communities and schools. Following a recent trip to Samoa, our CEO Mark Spring decided to extend our efforts just a little bit further. We have many Samoan staff members, plenty with family still there and through these connections Mark discovered Lotofaga Primary School. This is a school of about 200 kids in a big schoolhouse with virtually no supplies. The children had no desks and chairs and were using school books meant for college kids. It was pretty much just blackboards and chalk.
Mark rounded up support from many of dtr’s suppliers and put Lee Trigg our IT Manager in charge of managing it all. Lee wrangled, begged and bargained his way to filling an entire 40ft container with goods for the school. Desks, chairs, tables, computers, books and sports equipment. it was a truly massive outpouring and we are incredibly grateful for all the generosity from people who donated and supported our efforts.
Mark, Lee, Glenn Capelli plus Rod Prosser from our advertising agency (JWT) headed over in August to deliver the supplies and help the school set up. They had been thinking they would pop in, do their thing and then head off. However, were taken aback by the level of appreciation and gratitude displayed by the school and their community. The Deputy Prime Minister even came over for the ceremonies. Mark is now an honourary chief, although we’re not quite sure what his chiefly duties include…
The whole event was absolutely fantastic and everyone came back feeling like they had really made a difference. It was an honour to be able to reach out to this community and words can’t express how it all feels but hopefully the clip below can in some small way. Please enjoy and thank you again to all the suppliers who stepped up and supported this very worthy cause.
