Christchurch staff and the Warriors game - March 2011Mark Spring March 15, 2011 : 0
Last Saturday night, we hosted our Christchurch staff and their families for the weekend up here in Auckland.
I guess like many who have been personally unaffected by the quake, there’s a sense of guilt at being spared, and of frustration at not being able to contribute meaningfully. Whilst we’ve made a sizable donation to the quake appeal as an organisation, when the devastation is in your own backyard this seems an inadequate response, with a need to participate in a more direct manner.
This initiative was one based on the promise that ‘a change is as good as a rest’, and was designed simply to provide a change of scene to help our Christchurch staff in some small way by alleviating the trauma associated with the devastated Canterbury region.
The team from Christchurch flew up Saturday morning, before exploring the Auckland CBD (including a leap from the Sky Tower) from their base at the Rendezvous Hotel. From there we attended the Vodafone Warriors game at Eden Park, hosted by the Mad Butcher in the Members Lounge. Each of the team also received their own Vodafone Warriors jersey as a souvenir of the trip.
Whilst the result of the match was disappointing and our return taxis went astray, these were irrelevant issues that were put into perspective with this comment from one of the team;
‘To be able to watch our daughter laugh, smile and sleep right through the night for the first time in weeks was truly wonderful.’
Our thanks goes to Air New Zealand, the Rendezvous Hotel, the Mad Butcher and Canterbury New Zealand for their support in making this possible.
